Calculus is often regarded as a challenging math course. Many of my math teacher colleagues remember how to take the derivative of a function, but have no idea what it conceptually means. I believe these topics can best be understood when they are connected to the real world. For our first major unit on derivatives, motion detectors will allow us to visualize and discuss rate of change, not as a theoretical concept, but as something they have agency over. There is a world of inquiry, access, and tasks that open up once these motion detectors are in the hands of students. I am asking for 10 motion detectors so that we can have a 3 to 1 ratio of students to motion detectors for the most hands-on, collaborative learning experience possible. My hope is that students will understand topics of calculus years from now because it was attached to an experience they had in the real-world.
