Our school is working hard to get more technology in the classroom, but right now it is up to me to have the technology we need in my classroom every day. Currently there is one student desktop computer. With up to 30 students in some classes, my ultimate goal is to get our computer numbers up to 15 so that at least half of the students in each class would be able to use a computer or they could all be working on an activity with a partner. Students are engaged, productive, and growing when given access to technology in the classroom. Students need technology to develop science research skills. Most students can use the computer for gaming and social media, but have great difficulty using the internet to find good sources of credible information for research projects. Developing good research skills will serve them not just in Life Science, but throughout their academic career. Students will also be able to take fuller advantage of many interactive simulations and modules that bring abstract concepts like biochemistry and genetics to life. They may also access Khan Academy and Canvas right in the classroom-giving students access to engaging practice and content that gives often instant feedback and helps students to stay on track with material, but also work at their own pace. Having technology available right in the classroom to be able to access these programs every day is invaluable!
