Students enter my classroom dealing with a multitude of stressors. For some it is the social anxiety of interacting in crowded hallways. For others, it is dealing with the serious illness of a family member. For a few of them, it is managing past experiences that stir up deep emotions in the present. No matter the reason, many children are desperate need of a few minutes of retreat in order to reset their emotions and regulate themselves for the typical academic tasks of the day. My mission is to provide this space for all students to use whenever necessary. By creating a calming spot within my classroom with unrestricted use, students can access a soothing environment with tactile and comforting accessories, yet never miss instructional time. This benefits them academically, socially, and emotionally.
