I am excited to adopt the classroom book a day project into my seventh and eighth-grade reading class this year. Jillian Heise created classroom book a day during the 2014-2015 school year after participating in Donalyn Miller’s book a day challenge. Her goal was to read aloud a picture book every day of the school year with her seventh and eighth-grade students. She met her goal, and 180 complete texts were shared, which helped build classroom community and reading engagement. A picture book is a book, typically for children, in which the illustrations are as important as, or more important than, the words in telling the story. We all remember the days of our teacher reading to us. Why is it that tends to go away when students get to middle school? Here are just a few of the benefits to reading picture books for middle school students: social-emotional learning, building community classroom, exposure to ideas and information, a better understanding of a theme, and improve comprehension. This project will also enable necessary discussions regarding current events, social issues, and themes. My goal is to read at least one picture book per week. Monday’s can sometimes be stressful for students to return to school and continue with the expectations of the school. Others return to us on those Mondays just looking for normalcy. As students return from hectic or peaceful weekends, Monday will be the day they know we will start class with a picture book read aloud. The picture book of the week will hopefully help myself and students to settle back into our routine by first enjoying a read-aloud before we begin our weekly lessons.
