A People's History of the United States by Howard Zinn is considered a seminal work in American History, bringing needed perspectives to bear and giving students a more nuanced look at history. While old school history classes were taught as "dead white men" focusing too often on presidents, Zinn brings together minority, women, and youth voices with an astounding compendium of primary and secondary sources. I plan to have my AP students split chapters into book reports and present to the class, and have the most advanced students read the entire book over the year. Right now, I have only my old dog-eared copy. My students deserve their own actual physical book, and their learning will improve dramatically.
