I am a teacher in an SED Self Contained classroom (Severely Emotionally Disabled) and the most difficult thing to do with these students, is to actually have them show up to school. When they DO show up, it's because their teacher(s) has successfully created a classroom of respect and rapport. I am a second-year teacher, and I want more than anything for my students to feel safe and comfortable in my classroom. For my students, walking into a classroom with rows of desks and a PowerPoint on the screen is very intimidating. That's why I want them to walk into a classroom with minimal desks and a "Relaxation Corner" with a comfortable rug and beanbag chairs, where they can feel safe and more "at home." The reason I have chosen the Alexa Dot, the microwave, and the mini fridge is because often times, my students will need to use these appliances to eat their lunch and some of my students can not go into the crowded lunchroom to that their lunches because it is over stimulating and too crowded for them to feel comfortable. The Alexa dot will be used for many things in my classroom. Students can ask questions and set timers and use many of her other features to help them grow and learn through out the year.
