Kids don't always have a choice what they learn when they come to school, but we've been working hard to make sure that they have some say in how they learn it. Choices in learning increase success for learners, and seating is just one of those small choices that can make a big difference! Putting students in the driver's seat gives them a sense of ownership over their learning. One way that we can do that is to provide them with tools to explore what works for them, and the leeway to make a smart choice for them. Seating that allows them to move (yoga balls, wobble stools) while they learn, think and work allows some students to focus more effectively. Other students may benefit from a tool which will give them some sensory input (foot rollers, massage balls, fidget bands) while they listen. The beauty of these tools is that not one of them is good for a single purpose. Each student can learn how to use them in a way that works for them. Our goal is to make sure that students have access to the items so that they have the resources to learn about themselves and their learning styles. The better they can know what they need to be successful, the more prepared they will be for the coming years of school and beyond.
