In our science classroom, students have room to experiment, collaborate, and even hold whole class debates on questions like "Why is this liquid oxygen machine not working?" "Would this exoplanet ever experience a solar eclipse?" and "Why is Jackie an elite long-distance runner if the rest of her family are elite sprinters?" We explore many different topics together and students appreciate having a large, well-stocked, and inviting space to do these things in. However, my classroom does not have enough wall space to support student learning. One wall is entirely subdivided into windows and two walls are entirely built-in bookshelves. There are no bulletin boards in the room. In a class with many emergent bilinguals, where we cover new topics every month, the lack of wall space means we do not have room for essentials like a large and easy to read word wall, space to display student work, or engaging bulletin boards that spark student inquiry. The magnetic mobile whiteboards I am requesting would live in my classroom and be used for a variety of purposes, making our learning more flexible and supporting my students. I teach both the 7th and 8th graders at my school, for a total of 180 students. Two whiteboards will double the space available for word walls, collaborative writing between students, and displays of exemplary student work. Because these whiteboards will be mobile, they can be moved wherever students need them. Because they are magnetic, they can display anchor charts for the unit at hand, as well as student work that shows off just how much we've learned. The flexibility and additional space provided by these whiteboards make them a perfect fit for our dynamic science classroom.
