The class books will impact students by exposing them to content standards while increasing their grade-level reading ability. I have used nonfiction novels in my classroom before, while the students were much older, and I saw a profound increase in students overall standardized test scores, conducted at the end of the year. In the recent professional development courses I have completed I learned that a student’s reading level was the single most important indicator of how they will score on these end of the year achievement test. Encouraging my students to reach outside their comfort zone, and do things they have not typically done it is my hope that every one of them will become a life long learner and reader.
