Recent research shows that two out of the five brain pathways engaged when doing math - the dorsal and the ventral pathways - are visual. Students need to be able to see the math they are doing to truly understand. This is why these materials are so crucial to the fifth grade students at Valor Middle. These tools will help students visualize and manipulate volume, fractions and decimals, the major components of the curriculum. With these tools, I can challenge the students with interesting, real-life challenges to solve that will create enduring understandings of the concepts we are learning. They will not only be able to enjoy the math they are doing but will remember and apply it to new situations.
