I am specifically hoping for flexible seating options for preschoolers, as well as materials for dramatic play centers. “Play is how children begin to understand and process their world,” says Angie Rupan, Program Coordinator for Child Development Center in South San Francisco, CA and early childhood educator for over 20 years. “Children's play unlocks their creativity and imagination, and develops reading, thinking, and problem-solving skills, as well as further, develops motor skills. It provides the base foundation for learning.” By funding this project you will help my students in language and vocabulary development, imagination and creativity, problem solving and mathematics skills, and gross and fine motor development. All of this can be done through play! Having a dramatic play area where students can practice life skills, while having meaningful conversation is essential in an early childhood classroom. The kitchen set will provide this space for my students. The flexible seating I am requesting will give students choice in the classroom environment. It will create a collaborative space where they can choose to work or play independently, in small groups, or with a partner. This type is seating will also allow my students to self-regulate their comfort during the day and better focus on the tasks at hand.
