Literature Circles are opportunities for students to read and discuss books with their peers with structure and focus yet on their own terms. As high school language arts classrooms have evolved to involve more skill-focused instruction and where instructional time is precious, students don't often have the opportunity to read for enjoyment. My Reading and Writing for Enjoyment class is an exception. This library of twelve novel sets will give my students choice. The library includes a wide-range of reading levels as well as interests for students to choose from. Students will be able to choose their groups as well as their novels. Groups will work within a guided structure with routines and leadership roles yet will lead their own discussions. They will develop critical speaking and listening skills as their teacher acts as a facilitator rather than discussion leader. When done with their reading experience, groups will work together to share their novels with the class in a creative way. Literature Circles help promote a love of reading. I can give students the time and support, help me provide them with some reading choices to help them enjoy their reading.
