Students are introduced to the concept of friction as a force that impedes motion when two surfaces are in contact. Students will work in teams to use a spring scale to drag an object such a wood plank along a table top. Students will start adding different weights to the plank, try to move it, and measure the force in Newtons under which the plank begins to move. They use the spring scale to measure the frictional force that exists between the moving plank and the surface on which it slides. As they add more weight, it becomes clear that the amount of force required keeps increasing. This is because the weight pushing the plank downwards increases the frictional force between the plank and surface, and so requires a greater force to overcome it.
