Imagine that you want to invite your fourth-grade students on a visual journey to appreciate the vast and varied geography of this state, and the earth forces that have shaped it, but are unable to project images or film and video clips that will allow them to actually embark on this journey. The projector and speaker that I am requesting will make it possible for students to take this journey with me. In the fourth grade, students in California learn about the states, its various regions, and their physical environments and characteristics. But many of my students have never seen the Pacific Ocean or traveled to the Sierra Nevadas. With your support, they will "visit" the ocean, mountain ranges, rivers, bays and valleys that make up this magnificent state. The power of photos, film, and sound will be no less important in teaching students about the history of California. I want students learning about the Gold Rush to be able to view the classic Charlie Chaplin film. Similarly, in studying maps and learning about the North and South Poles, I want my students to be able to actually see what these environments look like and hear the sound of a calving glacier. I am continually creating google slide shows and searching out amazing videos to engage my students - and they are extremely effective. But without a classroom projector, I am continually uncertain about whether I will be able to share these visual and audio resources on any given day. With your support, I will know my students can embark on the journeys I have planned.
