My seventh-graders use Chromebooks every day. The days of only using pen and paper for writing are in the past. Today's students need to be able to use today's technology as they create. However, I currently don't have enough Chromebooks for all of my students. As we work through each writing assignment, the use of Chromebooks is both efficient and enjoyable. Most of my students prefer typing to hand drafting their writing pieces. We use the devices for planning, conferencing about, and then drafting blood-chilling and heart-wrenching stories. Students can then share their stories with their classmates and me as they revise. I teach them how to use revising tools, such as a thesaurus, dictionary, and synonyms. We also research current topics and then construct argument essays complete with references cited, tables, graphs, and other images. Editing is easier with Chromebooks as we use the technological tools that professional writers use. Sharing and collaboration, a crucial step in revising, is more effective with these devices. Students often share drafts through their Google accounts as small groups gather to help each other improve their writing. Students also use Chromebooks to create their own digital reference notebooks for each unit we tackle. In my classroom, a Chromebook is just as important as a writer's notebook. The use of these devices makes writing more productive and more enjoyable for students.
