I want to offer my students a variety of seating in our room to help foster active learning. This project would provide bean bag chairs, balance balls, stools, wobble cushions, and trays that would allow students to stand to learn. This would be enough options for every student to find their "just right" seat to be the most comfortable in order to do their personal best! They would be able to use these as needed at their seats, at small group time, during whole group learning, as well as during collaborative learning. These seats will be used as a part of a flexible seating design. These alternative seats will allow my students to move freely and stay focused when it is most important. Engagement and active learning improve retention. Having options other than the basic, hard plastic chairs to be comfortable is what this project is all about. Students this year and many years to come will get great use and I will always have a comfortable and active classroom! Research has shown movement in the classroom being directly correlated to their ability to stay focused and pay attention. Herman Miller states in their research that, "Comfortable classrooms-physically and psychologically - promote a sense of well-being, keep minds focused, and limit distractions." By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.
