Students will learn about the neighborhood of Harlem, New York and we'll concentrate on the artists Romare Bearden, Faith Ringgold, and Jacob Lawrence. We will discuss how these artists represented their neighborhood's people, ideas, and culture. Then we will make connections with our neighborhood of North Minneapolis. Students will have a chance to tell a story about a person, building, or open space in their neighborhood and we will turn that story into an image. These images will be transferred onto foam sheets so that we can make many prints of each image in multiple colors. Together in each class, students will collaborate by joining their images on an overlapping map, combining the places and people that make North Minneapolis significant to them. Lastly, we will invite our community into our school for our annual Black History Month Art Expo to share our work.
