Being able to read has the long-term potential to make or break a person's life. Studies directly correlate lack of literacy skills with lower incomes and and higher chances of being incarcerated. This is our chance to change the trajectory of our students' lives by matching them to positive, engaging books that reflect who they are. The books on our list are recommended by Columbia University specifically for 5th grade students who are reading below grade level. Hooking them into a series is one of the best ways to change students' attitudes towards literacy and increase reading volume, which increases reading proficiency. These books will also be available to our 3rd and 4th grade students.
