Our district has adopted Foundations and Frameworks as our reading program. In this program students read novels to learn, practice, and demonstrate the skills laid out in our standards. This not only allows students to read entire novels(no matter the reading level), it also gives them the real world connection to the skill that they are all searching for. Using novels is also beneficial because the students enjoy the storylines, characters, and connection they get by reading the whole story. A lot of the time the stories included in textbooks are excerpts from other prices of literature or stories made up for the sole purpose of that skill, instead of finding the skill in a true piece of literature. We use these novels in different settings such as: read aloud, small group, partner read, and closer to the end of the year we allow them to independently read. Since second grade is the year of transition from learning to read, to reading to learn, I think that this program is perfect for us. However, using a different novel for every skill becomes very expensive. Our school is a Title I school that has a very high free/reduced lunch rate. However, the students in second grade love to be at school and truly come to learn. Please consider donating, my students thrive on this program. By adding more novels to the yearly plan my students will be exposed to even more literature.
