Our fifth graders are starting a unit on the Civil War next quarter. Too often, American schools with the best intentions fail their students in teaching the hard history of our country's legacy. My projects asks for your donations to build up my classroom's text bank of liberating, slave-centered narratives of slavery and the Civil War. The books chosen were recommended by the SPLC's Teaching Tolerance center. Our classroom is majority African American, and our students deserve to learn from diverse books that empower black voices and don't shy away from the hard truths. A 2017 report by the SPLC found that only 8% of American high school seniors could name disagreements about slavery as the cause of the civil war. If another report was done in 2027, when my fifth graders will graduate high school, I hope those numbers have changed dramatically. But I don't want to wait, I want to start now -- by giving my students an age-appropriate introduction to the realities of Antebellum America, the causes of the Civil War, and the ripple effects of Reconstruction which live with us to this day.
