I will be teaching my first year at George Washington High School in Northeast Philadelphia, PA this year. As part of an inner city school district, resources and money are scarce and many of the materials we have are either outdated or no longer relevant/applicable to today’s students. As of right now, we have ONE class set of ONE novel for our 450+ ninth grade students and it is Night by Elie Weisel. One of the key things we learn as educators is that in order for students to strive for success, we must set high expectations for them. It is my belief that giving them one lower level novel to read over the course of an entire year is doing the exact opposite, implying to our kids that they’re not capable of more than that—which I KNOW is not the case. Although they all have different backgrounds and intelligences, ALL of my students are capable of doing high level work, they just need the tools! This campaign is designed to raise money for additional class texts at GW High for our current and future students.
