My 3rd grader students are very social and love to interact during the learning process. Our school-wide focus has been that student engagement is enhanced when flexible seating is in every classroom. While there are times that students are seated at desks, I have found that students are much more engaged when they are away from desks. We need a carpet. Most of the true learning in our classroom takes place when students are away from their desks and allowed to interact with each other and the teacher in the center of the classroom on the floor. We have had amazing discussions that were initiated by reading current day articles from student magazines. We need Storyworks Jr. These discussions put academics into a real-life perspective. This ensures that students have an opportunity to interact toward taking ownership of their learning.
