The materials I am asking for will go a long way towards helping our students in the math classroom. Often times, we rely on 2D representations to learn about 3D concepts. With 3D figures that our students can manipulate, students will take often abstract concepts such as volume and surface area, and be able to make it more concrete. 2D and numerical constructs can be created and manipulated as well with the materials I am requesting. Base 10 Blocks can be used to represent what numbers look like and can help students with the different mathematic operations and measurements as well (such as volume and perimeter). Having such items at our disposal also allows our students the chance to work more in groups and apply what they learn in a hands-on fashion. Manipulatives are important for differentiation, especially for our English language learners. Having more concrete representation allows the students to solidify the concepts while also preventing misinterpretation or confusing a concept with a cognate. Helping students apply the concept with these tools will aid them in the process of comprehending abstract mathematical concepts.
