Small group tables will allow my students to engage in collaborative discussions during math talks and science investigations. In the content areas of math and science, low-performing students do not comprehend what a problem asks usually due to a vocabulary deficit. This challenge is very real for ELLs. When students are able to work together to better understand what the problem is and steps in solving the problem, the content becomes more attainable. In both math and science, students need to be highly engaged in order to master each goal/skill. Small group discussions build confidence and motivation. Once students are more engaged, they are less likely to resort to “I’m no good at math”, or “math/science is too hard”. Each and every student IS a mathematician and scientist!
