I have been a science teacher for 5 years now at my school, and over the course of my time here I have noticed students really struggle with understanding that mistakes are a part of the learning process. With the new NGSS science standards how students learn and are successful in science class has changed. The new standards revolve around problem solving, collaboration, and growing conclusions/solutions based on their discoveries or research. This is helping students to become real world problem solvers. Problem solving and collaboration when learning science is invaluable! Unfortunately, I have mostly avoided using the black boards in the front of my room because they are messy and the chalk breaks easily. These black boards have become wasted space. After spending years constantly looking for space for more student collaboration in my classroom, I realized it would be possible if I updated these old chalkboard surfaces with whiteboard film and contact paper! My goal is for students to feel welcome and safe in my classroom so that they can take risks in the learning process and feel supported by myself and their peers. I hope adding these materials to my classroom will help develop this type of learning environment.
