I want to be able to provide my students with opportunities to create and explore within the classroom and I feel these tools would give me ample opportunity to do so daily. These materials will not be viewed as toys in our classroom, they will be presented as learning tools. Yes, students will have time to build freely with these materials in order to encourage them to develop their imagination and create. However, they will also be tasked with using the materials to demonstrate their knowledge. Our science standards in second grade allow for many opportunities to design and build models. For example, 2nd grade students are assessed on designing and constructing models to simulate how animals disperse seeds or pollinate plants. Another science assessment includes students being able to demonstrate how structures made from small pieces can be disassembled and then rearranged to make new and different structures. These materials can also be used in math for modeling 3D shapes and word problems. The possibilities are truly limitless!
