We all agree reading every day makes a better reader. It makes sense to everyone except for students who don't have enough books to read or the titles are as old as their teachers. So new titles with current authors students like to read will definitely help students' interest and get them reading. High quality, high-interest books can help my students become better readers by reading often. I teach 5th Grade at GWBE in Stockton, CA. It is a title one school. Stockton is lowest in literacy rate in big towns in our country. I have 30 students in my class. This is one of the most amazing group of students a teacher can ask for. The eagerness to learn, help each other and, cooperate with me in any way possible has just blown my mind. We have a new reading program that lends itself to time in class and at home for students to pick a book of their choice. As a teacher, my first priority is to give to my students high - interest books on topics that they really enjoy reading about. The first day of school I had put books in baskets to students to choose from for their independent reading time. I asked them to make two piles of books, one they like to read and second they don't like so much. To my surprise, two- thirds of the books went in a pile that they did not like. I promised them that I will be adding new books soon.
