I feel that my students needs to learn about cultural diversity. My students have had enough about reading novels by dead white guys. I want my students to read Zora Neal Hurston to understand the struggles of African-Americans 80+ years ago. In a predominantly-white school, yet with little funding, I feel like it is crucial for my students to read about and learn from their African-American classmates. I firmly believe that this novel can inspire the crucial discussion between races. In a solely-white classroom, this novel will allow students to learn of other races, encouraging enlightenment and tolerance. I will use the copies of Their Eyes Were Watching God as a novel study. I will teach my students to identify and analyze typical English concepts, like similes, metaphors, etc. However, more importantly, this novel will provide my students with knowledge of cultures different than their own, fostering understanding and tolerance among cultures and races.
