Research is proving that African American and Latino students learn math best when it is culturally relevant, real-world based, and has immediacy within their lives. I want to address these needs by having my students examine, via mathematics, a social issue impacting their communities: People of color are involuntarily being forced from Boston due to commercialization, gentrification, and increased rents. I then want to facilitate the launch of a student online business that brings awareness to and addresses this issue. Using math skills to launch a business that impacts the world will empower my students. We will create a made-to-order apparel company that celebrates minority contributions and history in Boston. Examples of products will include student designed T-shirts with artwork representing historically minority Boston neighborhoods. A theme will be "Keep Boston Colorful!" The students will present and market the business and its message to local community members, businesses, and civic leaders. We will also reach out to entrepreneurial programs at local universities for assistance. As do many urban educators, each year I purchase all all of my classroom supplies, from pencils to notebooks and everything in between. The projector (with smartphone connectivity) will be essential in allowing my students to easily setup and present the business to others. I have included some other classroom supplies in hopes of offsetting money that I will need to spend personally on purchasing/managing a retail website and buying samples of our products. This project and how it can help underprivileged children synthesize mathematics for a greater cause is worth my investments. Still, the generous contributions of donors will help ease the financial burden of making a truly innovative project a reality.
