Reading is an integral part of our daily classroom experience. Students get to visit the school library and our classroom library on a weekly basis to select texts that interest them. As a new teacher, I am always searching and adding books to my collection. Each of the books in my project has been chosen with my students in mind-I have thought about their unique backgrounds, their wide array of interests, and the genres and topics they'll be learning about all year. My students love their independent reading time, and look forward to cozying up with their snack and a book each day. With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a wider variety of texts, exposing them to different stories told by diverse authors at a range of levels. The best way to increase reading skills is to spend more time reading, and having a stronger selection of books to choose from will support my students in doing just that. Aside from books, I'm also requesting a few pillows to create a reading-friendly environment. My request also includes two, 11-compartment desktop organizers for students to store their reading reflection and comprehension worksheets. These individualized tools enable them to build word-solving skills and comprehension strategies as they read independently.
