My office is a safe place for students to come when they are upset, angry, annoyed, or simply need a person to talk to. Building relationships with students is my number one priority and I want them ALL to feel welcomed. Students with traumatic backgrounds have a harder time focusing, regulating emotions, and struggle more academically. Trauma impacts a child's brain and cognitive processes, making critical thinking and problem solving more difficult and emotional outbursts more likely. My office is a bright, colorful, welcoming place where students can come to escape the rigor and structure of the classroom when they are feeling overwhelmed. The supplies listed below will help me offer students something to get them through their days, and make their lives a little bit easier. These supplies will help calm students down so they can get back to the classroom quicker. The supplies are meant to assist myself and the students as I help teach them how to better control their feelings and emotions. The primary goal of providing stress relief options for students is to minimize time lost from direct instruction due to emotional distress. Stress relief tools will help students to de-escalate and be better prepared to resolve conflicts, problem solve solutions to challenging circumstances and maximize learning time in the classroom. Students will improve their focus and develop coping skills that ultimately they will learn to use independently as they practice techniques of self-regulation. By building connections with students in distress, I will be in a better position to make continuing recommendations to support the process of change for each individual student.
