My students have fallen in love with reading. As kindergartners they discovered that they have the power to pick up a book and begin to understand the meaning within the pages. Sadly, due to low funding, our library is not doing so well. More so, most of the books in our library do not tell stories of people who look like my students. As they move on to first grade, I want to empower my students not only by their ability to read but by the stories they read about people who look like them and who look different. I want my students to be able to go to our library and discover books about people of all races and backgrounds, of different sexualities, and of different and shared experiences. Everyone deserves to be able to see themselves in the stories they read as well as to learn about diverse backgrounds and experiences. I want to empower my students by providing them with a library of books showing diversity, love, and social justice.
