Children are more likely to become lifelong readers and learners when they are exposed to literature that allows them to see themselves (mirrors) and into the lives of others (windows). As the reading specialist, I plan the language arts lessons with the K-5 teachers. The teachers look to me for engaging literature. These books will be integrated into the reading and writing lessons to spark interest and imagination. These books will encourage young readers to also become young authors and share their stories orally and in writing. This collection of books was chosen to purposefully teach lessons in building good character. When I model lessons in classrooms, I’ll demonstrate how these books can be used to support a variety of comprehension strategies, serve as mentor texts for narrative writing, and launch conversations about life lessons taught through the main character’s actions and words.
