My Middle School ESL Book Study project is a way to bring my students' language and culture into the classroom. When students are represented in the classroom they are more likely to be motivated to learn and stay engaged. I want my ESL students to see themselves as important members of the school community and to have that feeling they need to see themselves in the content we're learning or reading. I chose the book, Taking Sides by Gary Soto because the main character is a young Latino boy that my Latinx ESL students can relate to. I chose a book that has characters, language, and culture that relate to their lives so that they can relate to the book and I can leverage that connection to teach language and literacy skills. I would like each student to have a book so that they can participate in read aloud and silent read activities as well as interact with the novel during lessons. We will use the notebooks for journals and to hold our student activity books throughout the book study.
