"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn," -Ignacio Estrada. In my ten years as a special education teacher, I have taught so many incredible students, and have worked hard in understanding how they each learn best and being creative in finding strategies and best practices to help them all be as successful as they can be. I work with Kindergarten, first and second grade students with disabilities. I teach students in 3-4 classrooms daily and most of these classrooms have quite some distance between them. One of the biggest challenges I face is having all of my necessary teaching materials, learning aides, manipulatives, sensory items, and data collection work that I need for my students with me at all times. Running back and forth while carrying a tremendous amount of varying learning tools with me to these various classrooms can become frustrating, and makes me feel that I am losing precious instruction and relationship building time with my students. The idea came to me this summer that having my own wheeled cart to load all of my necessary teaching and learning materials. This cart would give me the opportunity to not waste any instructional time as I would have all of the materials I require for my students in each grade level right there in the cart with me. This cart would be greatly beneficial to my students and to me as we will be able to jump right into our lessons and data collection sessions without me having to run to another classroom to get the material that could have been right in my cart the whole time. This cart would really be a game changer this school year for my students and myself!
