The sports equipment will be used to assist developing and strengthening physical and motor skills, fundamental motor skills and patterns (throwing, catching, walking, running, etc.) for children with disabilities, whose best chance of learning a sport and/or physical skill is often limited to their school environment. With the equipment you donate, my students' will have access to individual and group games and sports that are as appropriate for the person with a disability, as it is for a person without a disability. Last year, my students greatly enjoyed a bowling unit. However, the milk containers used as pins and the soccer ball used as a bowling ball in place of an actual set were not the most effective items to teach the game and build motor skills. Many of my students' had difficulty throwing or rolling a soccer ball because they had learned to kick it in a soccer unit. Since the majority of my students have language impairments, especially receptive language delays, it was difficult for them to grasp the concept of using the soccer ball differently. As a result, a significant portion of instructional time was allocated to getting this point across. And so, using the appropriate equipment when teaching a sport, skill, or game with my students is essential to their learning experience. My goal every day is to provide fun and engaging physical activity to students' with disabilities who have the potential and desire to play games, sports, and engage in physical movement. These experiences foster confidence, sportsmanship, communication, and socialization; all skills which will enable them to play amongst each other as well as with children in their communities who may or may not have a disability.
