While teaching in class, I realize that when students are given ownership of their learning, the outcome is more positive. I ask students to explore, why is it important to have a growth mindset, and once they have the basis for this topic, they come to class with an open mind. An environment where students are the center of their learning helps them become independent learners and empowers them to make decisions on their own. This ultimately prepares them for “real world” skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and negotiation skills. Of course, as educators, it is important to act as facilitators as coaches, and encourage better decision-making. Having this activity table in my classroom will allow me to have effective small group instruction. This table will allow me to work more closely with each student and groups of students. This type of instruction provides the opportunity to evaluate my students’ learning strengths, locate gaps in the development of their reading or math skills and tailor my lessons to focus on specific learning objectives. In addition, having a small group instruction in my class allows me to check for understanding, reinforce skills presented in whole group instruction, and/or change the pacing of my lessons.
