One of my students "big" assignments this year is to read a memoir and then write their own. I think it would be EXTREMELY difficult to write a memoir about yourself, your life, and your story if you did not have the work of an author of a similar culture and background as you to emulate your own work after. The best way to increase reading and writing ability is to read and write everyday. My students need and deserve the opportunity to read texts that they can relate to, find genuine interest in, and use to push themselves towards new understandings of both literacy and the world.

About my class
