Our students are children of poverty and miss many experiences enjoyed by more privileged peers. Most of our students are from single parent homes, multifamily households or are raised by grandparents. An alarming number are homeless. A trip to St. Augustine would be cost prohibitive on their budgets. Visiting St. Augustine offers an authentic setting to teach about the Native Americans and explorers that cannot be duplicated in the classroom. Our students will gain an in-depth understanding of the significance of St Augustine in state and national history. Students will see key features of the fort and be provided with an opportunity to experience why St. Augustine and the Castillo de San Marcos was so crucial in Florida’s history. Next students will visit and engage in an archaeologically significant site of the Native Americans called the Timucua. They will also see the original site of Pedro Menendez de Aviles’ settlement in 1565. Students will tour the city of St. Augustine during an hour-long trolley tour and see firsthand how the natives used oyster shells to build walls of protection and finally explore along historic St. George Street. Students will never forget this learning experience. This experience provides a broad knowledge base for test preparation across the curriculum and as they advance through the upper grades. Students of the digital age will have an awareness and up close personal hands on experience of cultural and historical value of St. Augustine’s significance in Florida history and United States history.
