At KIPP, students do not have access to a "school-wide" library, the libraries live inside of each classroom. Last year was my first year teaching and I spent a majority of that year trying to build our library. In building this collection of stories, I realized what a special place the reading corning was to my students and our literacy community. My students are noticeably more engaged with what they are reading when given a space to enjoy a text comfortably. The items I have selected will help me to accomplish two goals in our classroom: 1. Make quality texts accessible. 2. Create a space that promotes community literacy. Make quality texts accessible - The items that I have selected will allow me to make quality texts more accessible to students in two ways. First, it provides students with a bookshelf where they can go and find texts of interest to them. With a growing library, students need shelves to house the texts so that they are readily available and can maintain great condition for years. In addition, I have added texts that my students have expressed a deep interest in reading. These texts appeal to different reading and writings styles, helping to ensure that there is something for everyone in our library! Create a space that promotes community literacy - Choice seating options motivate students to want to be a part of this literacy space! Providing students will the opportunity to change scenes within their same classroom, sit in different chairs, helps encourage them to pick up a book and dive in! I have seen first hand how my students are noticeably more engaged in their text and motivated to read when they have a special space to do so comfortably.
