As a first-year teacher, there are so many materials that are needed to fully engage and assist your students in their education. As almost a full month of school has gone by, these three items are something that I have noticed are a real need in my classroom: headphones, wobble seats, and indoor recess games. Our school district is 1 to 1 with technology, which means we provide each student with a Chromebook, to use in the classroom, in order to complete tests, study spelling words, work on reading fluency, practice math facts, and much more! Although headphones are on the school supply list, not all of my students' families were able to purchase them. With this being said, the students who don't have headphones are missing out on a wonderful way to grow their minds in our classroom because they can't really focus on the work that is on their screens. Wobble seats will help my students stay focused and engaged during seatwork and instructional times. I have observed many of my students who are fidgeting with objects, moving around in their chairs, and moving side to side at their desks—some even resort to standing because they have such a strong urge to move. Wobble chairs allow flexibility for students to freely move around without taking away their focus from a lesson or work during class. When it rains, it pours. Students are always so sad when they hear those dreaded words... "indoor recess." Instead of running freely outside and working off all of that internal energy they have bouncing inside of them, they have to stay inside due to the weather. I want my students to be able to still have fun while also being interactive and building fundamental values with their peers.
