Play is an essential part of a kindergarten classroom, but learning to read and complete math problems has over-shadowed it. Kids learn best through play, as well as having a mental break to play, with classmates. This is also an essential time of growth for them in their social/emotional learning. Some of the toys in my classroom are from the 1990s and are not exciting for kids to play with anymore. I am trying to update my bins so that the kids are excited to have play time with their friends as well as create while playing. Funding this project will allow my students a chance to grow, giggle endlessly and race over to my play area with anticipation and excitement. I want to ignite a love of play in them that does not involve any technology, just their buddies and some fun toys. Each item in my cart would be placed in a fabric basket and stored in a shelf for play time. Each item was selected due to their interest (dinosaurs and trains) as well as their desire to build and create (all the blocks, connectors and marble runs). What I have seen the most from my students is that they love to create and build. LEGO bricks are a huge hit. This last year they had saved projects that they would go back to each play time and continue building. The imagination they have is quite fantastic, and I am hoping to continue this with more toys to create with.
