Social emotional learning and community building are very important parts of a child's education, especially in the primary years. A lot of these students come from all different backgrounds and cultures, so creating a classroom space where all are welcome is one of our most important goals. We would love to start off this school year by creating class shirts as a community building activity to show students that even though we may be different in many ways, we still have things that can bring us together. We made these shirts with our grade-level last year, and the impact was tremendous! Using the spray paint, the adults paint on a stenciled wolf, which is our school mascot. When they are dry, students get to use the fabric markers to personalize the shirts, showing fun and unique elements of their personalities. It is amazing to see the students take such pride in themselves, their creativity, and their school. An added piece to this community building that we decided to add this year was a "spirit necklace," which is what we will use the beads for. We will affix a wolf medallion to the necklaces and will use them as a way to recognize students at our weekly First Grade mini-assemblies. Students will be able to wear the necklaces with pride knowing they have positively contributed to their school community!
