Literature by authors of color has the transgressive power to include students traditionally left on the margins. With these incredible resources, my students will engage in book clubs to explore themes, characters, and hopefully discover a love of reading. In our special education class, my students will work towards reading goals while reading books that are relevant and meaningful to their lives. These wonderful books will help to provide my students with a new way of thinking about literature, and maybe their own lives. Through independent and shared reading, podcast discussions, and group projects, my students will grow their vocabulary, reading fluency, understanding of theme, and enjoyment of reading. When diversity is represented in literature, students have opportunities to see themselves in new ways that inspire and affirm. My students have experienced trauma in and out of school, and your donation will help them heal, find resilience, and become curious and passionate about the world.
