Materials like the drum pads will provide my students an opportunity to practice and master musical concepts and ideas in a safe place before transitioning to the drums. This transition is paramount to their learning because it allows them to make mistakes and try new ideas without the whole class hearing them which is not the case if they were playing on actual drums. Drumming, because of the physical demand it places on students, is also a healthy outlet for those students who have an abundance of energy. Throughout the course of the class, I will teach students how to read and play simple and complex rhythms, create musical cadences and grooves, as well as how to masterfully perform in front of others as a group and as a solo performer.
