We all want our students to become more fluent and engaged readers. It is my firm belief that exposing minority students to texts that center around characters that look like them can have a lasting impact on their self-esteem. Observing their shared experiences through written text is conducive to creating life-long readers; this is my goal. I want to create a library space where students are comfortable and engaged in the reading of texts highlighting minority characters. I want my students to see themselves and their stories in the literature they consume, while establishing a deeper connection to themselves.
