I taught English last year and while we had a class library, it was nothing to write home about. My students wanted to read books that will excite them but the books we had in our class library were not up to par and were uninteresting and mundane to them. It discouraged them from reading. I decided to speak to a few of them that especially felt discouraged from reading and highly uninterested in reading. I wanted to understand them and what kind of books they might be interested in. After I spoke with a few of them, I bought a few books and distributed them. In the days that followed, as they read, the light in their eyes as they spoke to me about these books and the characters that resonated with them was heartwarming. Unfortunately, I could not afford every type of book to meet every students need. This is why this project is important to me. I want to provide every genre of book to fit the variety and interest of the students in my classroom.
