Students in chemistry, physics and environmental science classes are required to learn to utilize graphing calculators to solve problems. Graphing calculators are used on the Advanced Placement exams, and for SATs. For many students, the cost of these calculators are too high, so they only get to use them in math class, or if they can afford to own one. My goal is to make graphing calculators available to every science student in my class. I have purchased several TI 84s for my classroom, usually lend out my own, and would like to expand my collection to offer to students. These calculators have an extensive display so students can see their work and I can monitor their process. They are an incredibly valuable tool in the classroom. I want my students to become more comfortable in generalizing and applying their skills from the math to science classroom. I hope that each year, I might add to the number of calculators I have, so all students have access to current technology.
