I'm sure the purchase of calculators for my classes is obvious. Yes, there are many online calculators, but the TI 30xs does exactly what we need for this level of math. The most valuable buttons are the fraction button and the Trigonometry function buttons on these calculators. I am preparing my students to not only go on to higher levels of math but to also score well on the ACT. This calculator is perfect for not only my class, but for use when taking the ACT. So why do I think high school math students need colored pencils and markers? I have learned when it comes to learning geometry we all need a little extra help. Yes, we are still working with equations like in algebra, except now these equations are embedded in shapes. When I teach my students concepts like angles created by parallel lines and transversals it is much easier for these students to see and understand what we are talking about or finding if we color code things. This is so beneficial to students nowadays. The majority of the geometry students that come through my door are very visual learners. Using color coding only helps them with this. For most math is hard enough. Anything I can do to help them to be successful is only icing on the cake!
