Mathematics is a subject in which a majority of my students struggle. They often to come to my class as an eighth grader frustrated, not understanding, and discouraged about the math to which they have been exposed. These students have been bombarded with rules, formulas, and abstract algorithms that frankly just don't make sense to them. My goal is to get them out of their seats, working with partners or small groups to make the math come alive and make sense. The marker boards will give me the tools to make this happen. Students will not only be able to show and see their thinking clearly, they will also see the thinking of others. By sharing this way students will affirm the correctness of their thoughts or, if need be, see inconsistencies in their work. Eighth grade students enjoy be able to move around the room, rather than sitting and working for 52 minutes. They like to work together and often prefer help from a friend when they are not clear on the task at hand. My students are seated in cooperative groups and have in the past used butcher paper to show thinking. Though this has been successful but still difficult to capture all students. I see a huge motivator in students being able to work at the board. Having the additional boards available in my room will allow my whole class to be engaged at one time, rather than just a few students at a time. Your help will make this dream come true. Thank you.
